現在のアジアにおいて間違いなく、もっとも刺激的なコンテンポラリーアート＆デザイン・チームのひとつである :phunk（ファンク）は、1994年に、アルヴィン・タン、メルヴィン・チー、ジャクソン・タン、ウィリアム・チャンという４人の中国系シンガポール人によって結成された。
:phunkの創造力の源泉は、彼らのベースであるシンガポールのマルチカルチュラル（多文化的）な環境そのもの。中国の伝統工芸や民間伝承、香港のパルプフィクション、日本の漫画やオタクカルチャー、西洋のポップ・カルチャーやアート＆デザインの諸潮流など、異なる背景を持つ要素を違和感なく混ぜ合わせ、再解釈し、ヴィジュアル化した彼らの作品群は、世界中に増殖しつづけている。
現在DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMAにて、日本初個展『WELCOME TO ELECTRICITY』を10月まで開催中。今後は８月と10月にシンガポールで、日本アート界のサイケデリック・マスター、田名網敬一とのコラボレーション展が立て続けに開催される予定。
:phunk is a contemporary art and design collective based in Singapore. Alvin Tan (b. 1974), Melvin Chee (b. 1974), Jackson Tan (b. 1974) and William Chan (b. 1973) are 4 Singaporean artists/designers.
They have propagated a visual signature that seamlessly blends and reinterprets their diverse influences such as traditional Chinese craft, philosophy and folklore, Hong Kong wuxia pulp fiction, Japanese manga and otaku subculture, Western popular culture, art and design movements into a singular creative thought that reflects their multi-cultural identity, background and environment.
Starting by their first solo exhibition “ELECTRICITY” in Japan taking place at DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA, they are going to have two collaborative exhibitions with Keiichi Tanaami, the psychedelic master of Japanese art scene, held in Singapore in August and October.
