Interview with LAURENCE BELL

"I think it’s always great art, very modern and original."

Please introduce yourself and your label, Domino Records.
Hello. My name is Laurence Bell. In 1993 I started a record label and called it DOMINO. The label is now 17 years old and we have released hundreds of recordings.

How long have you been working with Matt Cooper, and how did you meet him?
I have worked with Matt since before Domino began, when I worked at another record label. I signed a young band called Bowlfish, and Matt was a friend of their bass player' brother. They brought him in to design their record sleeves and we started working together from there.
I heard you asked Matt to create Domino's logo when you founded Domino. What did you exactly ask Matt to describe?
I think I asked him try and design something timeless and classic. I wanted something that would stand the test of time and not look dated. I didn't want it to be linked to particular musical styles either, which would limit us in any way.

Through the history of Domino, is there any favorite artwork?
I always liked the Bowlfish sleeves. I love all the Four Tet artwork. I think it’s always great art, very modern and original. I like the sleeves that Archie Bronson Outfit does as well. And the Kills too.
If you were to introduce Matt to someone who hasn't met him, how would you describe?
Hirsute and handsome, with an easy manner and a good eye for detail!

Please give a message to Matt!
Hi Matt! Thanks for being so patient. I do wish that you would still come to our Christmas parties.
Please share what's coming up next with you, and Domino Records.
We are releasing some magnificent new artists to the world this year. Look out for VILLAGERS and ANNA CALVI especially.
